The word qahwah is thought to have originated from the Ethiopian word kaffa, which is the name of the region where coffee is believed to have originated. The word kaffa was then adopted by the Arabs and spread to the rest of the world through trade. The Chinese word 咖啡 is a transliteration of the Arabic word qahwah, and it was first used in China in the 17th century.
