The Chinese character 营业 (yíngyè) is composed of two parts: 营 (yíng) and 业 (yè). 营 originally meant "military camp" or "fortress", and later extended to mean "business" or "trade". 业 originally meant "occupation" or "profession", and later extended to mean "business" or "enterprise". The combination of these two characters suggests the idea of "doing business" or "engaging in commerce".The word 营业 first appeared in the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD), and was used to refer to the activities of merchants and traders. Over time, the meaning of the word expanded to include any type of commercial activity, including manufacturing, transportation, and services. Today, 营业 is commonly used in Chinese to refer to the act of doing business or engaging in commerce.
