Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 愿望 (yuànwàng) for "wish" or "desire" is composed of two characters: 愿 (yuàn) and 望 (wàng). The character 愿 originally meant "to make an offering to the gods" and later came to mean "to wish" or "to desire". The character 望 originally meant "to look at" or "to gaze at" and later came to mean "to hope" or "to expect". Thus, the word 愿望 (yuànwàng) literally means "to look at what one desires" or "to hope for what one desires".
