Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 运气 (yùn qì) is composed of two characters: 运 (yùn) and 气 (qì). 运 originally meant "to carry" or "to transport," and later extended to mean "luck" or "fortune." 气 originally meant "air" or "breath," and later extended to mean "energy" or "vital force." Together, 运气 means "the movement of energy" or "the flow of fortune." It is often used to describe a person's luck or fortune, especially in terms of their career or financial situation. For example, someone who is experiencing a lot of good luck might be said to have good 运气, while someone who is experiencing a lot of bad luck might be said to have bad 运气.
