Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 代价 (dài jià) is composed of two characters: 代 (dài) and 价 (jià). The character 代 originally meant "to exchange" or "to substitute", and later extended to mean "on behalf of" or "instead of". The character 价 originally meant "value" or "price", and later extended to mean "cost" or "expense". When combined, the two characters 代价 literally mean "the price paid for a substitute", and figuratively mean "the cost or price of something". In modern Chinese, 代价 is used to refer to the cost, price, or sacrifice that is paid in order to achieve something. It can also be used to refer to the consequences or repercussions of an action.
