The Chinese character 端 (duān) means "beginning" or "initial", while 午 (wǔ) means "noon" or "midday". The character 节 (jié) means "festival" or "holiday". So 端午节 (Duānwǔ jié) literally means "the beginning of noon festival". It is believed that the festival originated in ancient China as a way to celebrate the summer solstice, which occurs on or around June 21st each year. The festival is also associated with the Dragon Boat Festival, which is a traditional Chinese holiday that commemorates the life and death of the poet Qu Yuan.
