Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 孤独 (gūdú) for "lonely" or "solitude" is composed of two characters: 古 (gǔ) and 独 (dú). The character 古 originally meant "ancient" or "old", but over time it came to be used in a more general sense to refer to anything that is past or gone. The character 独 means "alone" or "single". When these two characters are combined, they create the word 孤独, which literally means "old and alone". This word is often used to describe the feeling of being isolated or cut off from others. It can also be used to describe a person who is introverted or prefers to be alone.
