Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 官方 (guānfāng) is composed of two characters: 官 (guān) and 方 (fāng). The character 官 originally meant "government official" or "bureaucrat", and later extended to mean "official" or "authority". The character 方 originally meant "direction" or "region", and later extended to mean "method" or "way". When combined, the two characters 官方 (guānfāng) literally mean "official direction" or "official way". In modern Chinese, 官方 (guānfāng) is used to refer to the government, official organizations, or official statements. It can also be used to refer to something that is official or authoritative. For example, 官方文件 (guānfāng wénjiàn) means "official document", and 官方网站 (guānfāng wǎngzhàn) means "official website".
