Etymology & Components

The Chinese character 坚固 (jiāngù) is composed of two parts: 坚 (jiān) and 固 (gù). 坚 originally meant "hard" or "firm", and was often used to describe objects that were difficult to break or damage. 固 originally meant "to fix" or "to make firm", and was often used to describe things that were stable or secure. When combined, the two characters 坚固 take on the meaning of "firm and solid", or "strong and durable". This word is often used to describe buildings, structures, or objects that are built to last. For example, the Great Wall of China is often described as 坚固无比 (jiāngù bǐbì), meaning "extremely strong and durable".
