Etymology & Components

The Chinese word "模式" (mòshì) is composed of two characters: "模" (mó) and "式" (shì). The character "模" originally meant "to imitate" or "to copy", and later extended to mean "model" or "pattern". The character "式" originally meant "form" or "shape", and later extended to mean "style" or "manner". When combined, the two characters "模式" mean "model", "pattern", or "template".The word "模式" has been used in Chinese for centuries, and has been borrowed into other languages, such as Japanese and Korean. In Chinese culture, the concept of "模式" is closely related to the idea of "tradition", as it refers to the established ways of doing things that are passed down from generation to generation. In modern Chinese, the word "模式" is also used in a more general sense to refer to any kind of model or pattern, such as a mathematical model or a business model.
