Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 事件 (shìjiàn) is composed of two characters: 事 (shì) and 件 (jiàn). The character 事 originally meant "to serve" or "to do", and later extended to mean "affair", "matter", or "event". The character 件 originally meant "a piece" or "a section", and later extended to mean "an item", "a case", or "an incident". When combined, the two characters 事件 (shìjiàn) literally mean "a matter that has happened" or "an incident". In modern Chinese, 事件 (shìjiàn) is used to refer to a specific event or occurrence, such as a news event, a historical event, or a personal experience. It can also be used to refer to a series of events or a chain of events.
