Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 素质 (sùzhì) is a compound word consisting of two characters: 素 (sù) and 质 (zhì). The character 素 originally meant "white" or "plain", and later extended to mean "simple", "pure", or "natural". The character 质 originally meant "substance" or "material", and later extended to mean "quality" or "nature". When combined, the two characters 素质 (sùzhì) literally mean "plain quality" or "natural quality". In modern Chinese, 素质 (sùzhì) is used to refer to a person's moral character, upbringing, or cultivation. It can also be used to refer to the quality or standard of something. For example, we can say 一个人素质很高 (yī ge rén sùzhì hěn gāo) to mean "a person of high moral character" or 我们产品的质量很好 (wǒmen chǎnpǐn de zhìliàng hěn hǎo) to mean "the quality of our products is very good".
