Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 解决 (jiějué) is composed of two characters: 解 (jiě) and 决 (jué). The character 解 means "to untie, to loosen, to solve," while the character 决 means "to decide, to determine, to resolve." Together, the two characters form the word 解决, which means "to solve, to resolve, to settle."The word 解决 has been used in Chinese for centuries. It is first recorded in the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE) in the book Shiji (史记), written by the historian Sima Qian. In the Shiji, the word 解决 is used to describe how the emperor Wu of Han resolved a conflict between two of his generals.Since the Han dynasty, the word 解决 has been used in a variety of contexts to mean "to solve, to resolve, to settle." It is a common word in modern Chinese, and it is used in both formal and informal settings.
