The Chinese word 童话 (tónghuà) for "fairy tale" is composed of two characters: 童 (tóng), meaning "child", and 话 (huà), meaning "speech" or "story". Together, they literally mean "children's stories". This term was first used in the late 19th century to translate the Western concept of fairy tales into Chinese. It has since become the standard term for fairy tales in Chinese, and is widely used in both children's literature and popular culture.
