The Chinese word 舞蹈 (wǔdǎo) for "dance" is composed of two characters: 舞 (wǔ) and蹈 (dǎo). The character 舞 originally meant "to wave" or "to shake", and was often used to describe the movements of animals or birds. Over time, it came to be used specifically for the art of dance. The character 蹈 originally meant "to step on" or "to tread", and was often used to describe the movements of people walking or running. When combined, the two characters 舞蹈 create a word that perfectly captures the essence of dance: a combination of waving and stepping, of movement and rhythm.
