The Chinese word 治理 (zhǐlǐ) is composed of two characters: 治 (zhì) and 理 (lǐ). 治 originally meant "to rectify" or "to put in order", and was often used in the context of governing a country or society. 理, on the other hand, originally meant "pattern" or "principle", and was often used in the context of understanding or managing something. When combined, 治理 (zhǐlǐ) took on the meaning of "to govern" or "to administer", and is now commonly used in the context of public administration, management, or governance.
