Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 宝石 (bǎoshí) for "gemstone" is composed of two characters: 宝 (bǎo) and 石 (shí). The character 宝 originally meant "valuable" or "precious", and was often used to refer to rare and beautiful objects. Over time, it came to be used specifically for gemstones and other precious stones. The character 石 simply means "stone" or "rock". When combined, the two characters 宝石 form a compound word that refers to a valuable or precious stone, i.e. a gemstone.
