Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 本土 (běntǔ) is composed of two characters: 本 (běn) and 土 (tǔ). The character 本 originally meant "root" or "origin", and later extended to mean "this", "the present", or "the essence". The character 土 originally meant "earth" or "soil", and later extended to mean "land" or "territory". When combined, the two characters 本土 literally mean "this land" or "the land of our ancestors". In modern Chinese, 本土 is used to refer to one's own country or region, as opposed to foreign countries or regions. It can also be used to refer to local culture, customs, or products. For example, 本土文化 (běntǔ wénhuà) means "local culture", and 本土产品 (běntǔ chǎnpǐn) means "local products".
