Etymology & Components

The Chinese character 本子 (běn zǐ) is composed of two parts: 本 (běn) and 子 (zǐ). 本 originally meant "root" or "origin", and was later extended to mean "capital" or "principal". 子 originally meant "son" or "child", and was later extended to mean "a small thing" or "a copy". When combined, 本子 literally means "a small book" or "a notebook". In modern Chinese, 本子 is used to refer to a variety of things, including books, notebooks, ledgers, and accounts. It can also be used to refer to the script or text of a play or movie.
