The Chinese word "才能" (céngnéng) is composed of two characters: "才" (cái) and "能" (néng). The character "才" originally meant "a bud" or "a sprout", and later came to be used in the sense of "ability" or "talent". The character "能" originally meant "to be able to" or "to be capable of", and later came to be used in the sense of "ability" or "skill". Thus, the word "才能" literally means "the ability to do something" or "the skill to do something". It is often used to refer to a person's natural abilities or talents, or to their acquired skills or abilities. For example, we can say "他很有才能" (tā hěn yǒu céngnéng), which means "He is very talented".
