Etymology & Components

The Chinese character 赌 (dǔ) for "gamble" is composed of two parts: the radical 爫 (huǒ) on the left, which represents "fire", and the phonetic component 豆 (dòu), which represents "bean". The combination of these two components suggests the idea of "burning beans", which was a traditional method of divination in ancient China. In this method, beans were placed in a fire and the patterns formed by the burning beans were interpreted to predict the future. Over time, the character 赌 came to be used more broadly to refer to any form of gambling, including games of chance and betting.
