The Chinese word 游戏 (yóuxì) for "game" is composed of two characters: 游 (yóu) and 戏 (xì). The character 游 originally meant "to travel" or "to roam", and later extended to mean "to play" or "to amuse oneself". The character 戏 originally meant "to perform" or "to act", and later extended to mean "a play" or "a game". When combined, the two characters 游戏 (yóuxì) took on the meaning of "game", referring to an activity that is both entertaining and involves some form of competition or challenge.
