Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 花园 (huāyuán) for "garden" is composed of two characters: 花 (huā) meaning "flower" and 园 (yuán) meaning "enclosure" or "park". The term 花园 (huāyuán) first appeared in the Han Dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE) and was used to refer to a private garden or park within a larger estate. Over time, the meaning of 花园 (huāyuán) expanded to include any type of garden, regardless of its size or location. Today, 花园 (huāyuán) is the most common word used to refer to gardens in Chinese.
