Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 绘画 (huìhuà) for "painting" is composed of two characters: 绘 (huì) and 画 (huà). The character 绘 originally meant "to draw" or "to paint", and it is composed of the radical 糸 (mì), which represents silk, and the phonetic component 会 (huì). The character 画 originally meant "a picture" or "a drawing", and it is composed of the radical 竹 (zhú), which represents bamboo, and the phonetic component 画 (huà). Over time, the two characters 绘 and 画 came to be used interchangeably, and they are now both used to refer to painting.
