Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 局长 (júzhǎng) is composed of two characters: 局 (jú) and 长 (zhǎng). 局 originally meant "a corner" or "a small room", but it has come to be used in a variety of contexts to refer to a "bureau", "office", or "department". 长, on the other hand, means "long" or "leader". When these two characters are combined, 局长 literally means "head of a bureau" or "director of a department". In modern Chinese, 局长 is used as a general term for any high-ranking official in a government or business organization.
