Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 煤气 (méiqì) for "gas" is a compound of two characters: 煤 (méi), meaning "coal," and 气 (qì), meaning "air" or "gas." The term 煤气 originally referred to the gas produced by the destructive distillation of coal, which was used for lighting and heating in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, 煤气 is commonly used to refer to natural gas, which is a mixture of hydrocarbons found underground and used as a fuel. The term 天然气 (tiānránqì), literally "natural gas," is also used in Chinese to refer specifically to natural gas.
