Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 部分 (bùfèn) is composed of two characters: 部 (bù) and 分 (fèn). The character 部 originally meant "part of a body" or "section of a book", and later extended to mean "department" or "branch". The character 分 originally meant "to divide" or "to share", and later extended to mean "part" or "portion". When combined, the two characters 部分 (bùfèn) literally mean "part of a division" or "part of a whole". In modern Chinese, 部分 is used as a noun to mean "part", "portion", or "section", and can also be used as a verb to mean "to divide" or "to separate".
