Etymology & Components

The Chinese character 配 (pèi) is composed of two parts: 亻(rén) and 貝 (bèi). The radical 亻(rén) indicates that the character is related to people, while the phonetic component 貝 (bèi) provides a clue to its pronunciation. The original meaning of 配 (pèi) was "to match" or "to pair", which can be seen in its use in words like 搭配 (dāpèi, "to match") and 配偶 (pèi'ǒu, "spouse"). Over time, the meaning of 配 (pèi) expanded to include the ideas of "to distribute" and "to allocate", as in 分配 (fēnpèi, "to distribute") and 配给 (pèigěi, "to allocate"). In modern Chinese, 配 (pèi) can also be used as a verb meaning "to deserve" or "to be worthy of", as in 配得上 (pèi dé shàng, "to deserve") and 配不上 (pèi bù shàng, "to be unworthy of").
