The Chinese word for wine, 葡萄酒 (pútáojiǔ), is a compound of two characters: 葡 (pú), meaning "grape", and萄 (táo), meaning "peach". The character 萄 is a phonetic loan character, meaning that it was borrowed from another language to represent a similar sound. In this case, the character 萄 was borrowed from the Persian word for grape, "angūr". The character 萄 was then combined with the character 葡, which was already in use in Chinese to refer to grapes, to create the new word 葡萄酒, meaning "grape wine".
