Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 长城 (Chángchéng), meaning "Great Wall", is a compound of two characters: 长 (cháng), meaning "long", and 城 (chéng), meaning "wall" or "city". The term "Great Wall" was first used in the 3rd century BC by the historian Sima Qian in his Records of the Grand Historian. However, the construction of the Great Wall began much earlier, during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC), when various states built walls to protect their borders. The most famous section of the Great Wall is the Badaling Great Wall, located about 70 kilometers northwest of Beijing. It was built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in China.
