Etymology & Components

The Chinese word "取款机" (qǔkuǎnjī) is a compound word consisting of two characters: "取款" (qǔkuǎn) and "机" (jī). "取款" means "to withdraw money", and "机" means "machine". Therefore, "取款机" literally means "a machine for withdrawing money".The word "取款机" was coined in the 1980s, when China began to introduce automated teller machines (ATMs). ATMs were a new technology at the time, and there was no existing Chinese word for them. Therefore, the Chinese government decided to create a new word by combining the characters "取款" and "机".The word "取款机" is now widely used in China to refer to ATMs. It is also used in other Chinese-speaking countries and regions, such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.
