Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 超过 (chāoguò) is composed of two characters: 超 (chāo) and 过 (guò). The character 超 originally meant "to go beyond" or "to surpass", while the character 过 originally meant "to cross" or "to pass over". When combined, the two characters form the word 超过, which literally means "to go beyond" or "to surpass". In modern Chinese, 超过 is used in a variety of contexts to mean "to exceed", "to surpass", or "to go beyond". For example, we can say 他的成绩超过了我的成绩 (tā de chéngjī chāoguòle wǒ de chéngjī), which means "His成绩超过了我的成绩 (tā de chéngjī chāoguòle wǒ de chéngjī)".
