The Chinese character 社 (shè) is composed of two parts: the radical 土 (tǔ), which means "earth" or "soil", and the phonetic component 示 (shì), which is a simplified form of the character 社 (shè), which means "altar" or "shrine". The character 社 originally meant "a place where people gather to worship the gods of the land", and it later came to mean "society" or "community". In modern Chinese, 社 is used in a variety of words related to society, such as 社会 (shèhuì, "society"), 社区 (shèqū, "community"), and 社交 (shèjiāo, "social interaction").
