The character 值 originally meant "to be worth" or "to have value", and was often used in the context of money or goods. When combined, the two characters 升值 literally mean "to rise in value" or "to appreciate". In modern Chinese, 升值 is commonly used in the financial context to refer to an increase in the value of a currency or asset.
