The Chinese word 世界杯 (shìjièbēi) is a compound of two characters: 世界 (shìjiè), meaning "world", and 杯 (bēi), meaning "cup". The term originated from the French word "Coupe du Monde", which was first used in 1930 to refer to the inaugural FIFA World Cup tournament. When the concept of the World Cup was introduced to China, the Chinese characters 世界杯 were chosen to represent the event, as they accurately conveyed the meaning of "world cup".
