The Chinese word 跳水 (tiàoshuǐ) for "diving" is a compound of two characters: 跳 (tiào), meaning "to jump", and 水 (shuǐ), meaning "water". The word 跳水 is therefore literally translated as "to jump into water". This compound word is used to describe the sport of diving, in which athletes jump from a platform or springboard into a pool of water. The word 跳水 can also be used more generally to refer to any act of jumping into water, such as swimming or playing in a pool.
