The Chinese word 铁路 (tiělù) for "railway" is a compound of two characters: 铁 (tiě), meaning "iron," and 路 (lù), meaning "road" or "path." The term "railway" was first used in China in the late 19th century, when the country began to build its first railroads. The term was borrowed from the English word "railway," which is itself a compound of the words "rail" and "way." The Chinese characters 铁 and 路 were chosen to represent the concept of "railway" because they accurately describe the nature of a railroad: a road made of iron.
