The Chinese word 西装 (xīzhuāng) for "Western-style suit" is a compound of two characters: 西 (xī), meaning "West", and 装 (zhuāng), meaning "dress" or "attire". The term 西装 was coined in the late 19th century to refer to the Western-style clothing that was being adopted by Chinese people at the time. Prior to this, traditional Chinese clothing was the norm, but as China began to modernize and Western influence grew, Western-style clothing became increasingly popular. The term 西装 is still used today to refer to Western-style suits, and it is also used more broadly to refer to any type of Western-style clothing.
