Etymology & Components

The Chinese character 员 (yuán) is composed of two parts: 人 (rén), meaning "person", and 勹 (wéi), which is a phonetic component. The character 员 originally meant "a person who is in charge of something" or "an official". In modern Chinese, it is used as a suffix to indicate a person who holds a certain position or performs a certain function, such as 职工 (zhígōng, "employee") or 党员 (dǎngyuán, "Party member").The character 员 can also be used as a verb, meaning "to participate in" or "to join". For example, 参加 (cānjiā, "to participate") or 加入 (jiārù, "to join").The character 员 is also used in some Chinese surnames, such as 袁 (Yuán) and 闫 (Yán).
