The Chinese word 院长 (yuànzhǎng) is composed of two characters: 院 (yuàn) and 长 (zhǎng). 院 originally meant "a courtyard" or "a house with a courtyard", and later extended to refer to "a government office" or "a school". 长 originally meant "to grow" or "to become long", and later extended to refer to "a leader" or "a person in charge". Therefore, the word 院长 literally means "the person in charge of a government office or a school". In modern Chinese, 院长 is used as a title for the head of a university, a hospital, or other institution.
