怀疑

Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 怀疑 (huáiyí) is composed of two characters: 怀 (huái) and 疑 (yí). 怀 originally meant "to hold in the arms" or "to embrace", but it can also be used figuratively to mean "to have in mind" or "to suspect". 疑 means "doubt" or "suspicion". So, the word 怀疑 literally means "to hold doubt in mind" or "to have suspicion". It is often used to express the feeling of uncertainty or skepticism about something. For example, 你怀疑他吗？(Do you doubt him?) 我怀疑这件事是真的。(I doubt that this is true.)
