The Chinese word 性格 (xìnggé) for "personality" is composed of two characters: 性 (xìng) and 格 (gé). The character 性 originally meant "inborn nature" or "temperament", and was often used in the context of traditional Chinese medicine to describe a person's physical and mental characteristics. The character 格 originally meant "pattern" or "framework", and was often used in the context of Confucian philosophy to describe a person's moral character or disposition. Over time, the two characters came to be combined to form the word 性格, which is now used to refer to a person's overall personality or character.
