The Chinese word 质量 (zhìliàng) is composed of two characters: 质 (zhì) and 量 (liàng). 质 originally meant "substance" or "matter", and was later extended to mean "quality". 量 originally meant "quantity" or "measure", and was later extended to mean "amount".
