When combined, **本领** literally means "fundamental ability" or "basic skill". In modern Chinese, **本领** is used to refer to one's skills, abilities, or talents. It can also be used to refer to one's knowledge or expertise in a particular field. For example, someone who is good at cooking might be said to have good **本领** in the kitchen.
