Étymologie et composants

The Chinese word for virus is 病毒 (bìngdú). It is composed of two characters: - 病 (bìng), which means "disease" or "illness", and - 毒 (dú), which means "poison" or "toxin". Together, these two characters create the meaning of "a poisonous substance that causes disease". The term 病毒 was first used in Chinese in the late 19th century, when it was borrowed from the Japanese word ウイルス (uirusu), which in turn was derived from the English word "virus". The Chinese word 病毒 is now widely used in both scientific and everyday contexts to refer to viruses.
