The Chinese word 出版 (chūbǎn) for "publication" is composed of two characters: 出 (chū) and 版 (bǎn). The character 出 (chū) means "to go out" or "to come out", while the character 版 (bǎn) means "a wooden block" or "a printing plate". Together, the two characters 出版 (chūbǎn) literally mean "to go out from a wooden block", which refers to the process of printing books using wooden blocks. In ancient China, books were printed by carving characters onto wooden blocks and then inking the blocks and pressing them onto paper. The term 出版 (chūbǎn) was later extended to refer to the entire process of publishing books, including editing, printing, and distribution.
