Étymologie et composants

The Chinese word 除夕 (chúxī) is a compound of two characters: 除 (chú) and 夕 (xī). 除 means "to remove" or "to get rid of," while 夕 means "evening" or "night." Together, 除夕 literally means "the night of removing (the old year)." This name comes from the ancient Chinese custom of sweeping away the dust and dirt from the house on the last day of the year to get rid of bad luck and make way for good luck in the coming year. In modern times, 除夕 is still an important holiday in China, and it is celebrated with family gatherings, feasts, and fireworks displays.
