The Chinese word 理论 (lǐlùn) is composed of two characters: 理 (lǐ) and 论 (lùn). The character 理 (lǐ) originally meant "pattern" or "principle," and later came to mean "reason" or "theory." The character 论 (lùn) originally meant "to discuss" or "to debate," and later came to mean "theory" or "argument." Thus, the word 理论 (lǐlùn) literally means "to discuss principles" or "to debate theories." In modern Chinese, 理论 is used to refer to a systematic body of knowledge that is based on scientific principles and that can be used to explain and predict phenomena.
