The Chinese word 逻辑 (luóji) for "logic" is derived from two Chinese characters: 理 (lǐ) and 辑 (jí). The character 理 (lǐ) originally meant "pattern" or "principle," and later came to mean "reason" or "logic." The character 辑 (jí) originally meant "to collect" or "to compile," and later came to mean "to organize" or "to arrange." Thus, the word 逻辑 (luóji) literally means "the study of organizing principles." This meaning is consistent with the modern understanding of logic as the study of the formal principles of reasoning and argumentation.
