The Chinese word 命运 (mìngyùn) is composed of two characters: 命 (mìng) and 运 (yùn). 命 originally meant "decree" or "command," and was often used in a religious context to refer to the fate or destiny that is predetermined by a higher power. 运, on the other hand, originally meant "to carry" or "to transport," and was often used to refer to the movement of the heavens or the changing of the seasons. Over time, the two characters came to be used together to refer to one's overall fortune or destiny, as it is believed that one's fate is influenced by the movement of the heavens and the changing of the seasons.
